Bergen County Town Profiles: Franklin Lakes

In a recent New Jersey Monthly magazine survey, Franklin Lakes was ranked in the top 20 places to live in New Jersey. For residents of this lovely Bergen County community, this recognition comes as no surprise.

Situated in a quiet corner of northwest Bergen County, Franklin Lakes is a friendly community known for beautiful lakes and other natural features, an outstanding school system, one of Bergen County's finest libraries, and a community recreation program that offers events for children and families year-round.  

The Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve

The Franklin Lakes Nature Preserve, formerly known as the Haledon Reservoir, was acquired by the Borough of Franklin Lakes in 2006 from the Borough of Haledon, and was opened to the public in June 2011. Franklin Lakes Schools recently credited Franklin Lakes with having "some of the best schools for your housing buck". The report used national test scores, advanced placement offerings, graduation rates and other factors in its ratings.

Franklin Lakes Family Fitness & Well-Being 

The Franklin Lakes Recreation and Parks Department coordinates the Franklin Lakes Mayor’s Wellness Campaign programs which are conducted throughout the year. These programs are designed to promote healthy activities and well-being in our community. Activities and events are designed for all age groups, from youth to seniors, triathlons, basketball tournaments and 5K runs are just a few examples of program events.

Koko FitClub, located in the Franklin Crossing Shopping Center at 820 Franklin Avenue, is a fitness facility that offers a cutting-edge, technology-backed exercise, nutrition and personalized training solution that is apparently delivering tremendous results for its members. Koko FitClub has also opened a new facility in nearby Wyckoff.

The prestigious Elite Training Academy, located at 1 Tice Road in Franklin Lakes, is an indoor sports facility that has been designed expressly to support team-centric indoor practice, instruction and league play for 'turf-sports' such as soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey. The centerpiece of the facility is its 12,000 square foot indoor field, equipped with the latest generation of synthetic turf that looks, feels, and plays like real grass and meets all safety and testing standards. Programs are available at ETA for both youth and adult teams and players at all levels.

Franklin Lakes Kids' Activities

Franklin Lakes is very much a family town with programs and resources for kids available throughout the year. The Franklin Lakes Recreation Department is committed to providing young residents with programs and facilities that foster a sense of community, sportsmanship and well-being. Residents can register for an online community that provides essential sports and community information, including program registration, game and practice schedules, field and facilities information, fitness center activities and community news and events. You will also receive up-to-the-minute alerts and have the opportunity to experience Franklin Lakes sporting events and community programs as an active spectator through broadcasts, blog spots and interactive media.

The Franklin Lakes Public Library: Enrich, Enlighten, Educate, Empower

The Franklin Lakes Public Library, located at 470 DeKorte Drive, is one of the most active libraries in the region. The library team, led by Director Gerry McMahon, strives to enrich, enlighten, educate and empower every person in the community by providing free access to information, ideas and knowledge through books, programs and other resources.The library's website is an excellent place to go for information about resources, events and programs that are constantly being introduced throughout the year at the Franklin Lakes Public Library.

Franklin Lakes Resident Making a Difference

Franklin Lakes resident Geri Topfer, a dedicated yogi who was concerned about the many children in her surrounding communities whose lives were shaped by pain and suffering, is the founder of Kula for Karma, a nationally recognized organization with programs that are designed to work in tandem with traditional forms of medicine and both physical and mental healing. Complementary medicine makes use of unconventional treatment modalities and approaches that are non-surgical and non-pharmaceutical that have known efficacy. When combined with mainstream care, these modalities, including therapeutic yoga, meditation and breath work, are shown to have many benefits such as decreased stress, mood disturbance, and chronic pain; reduced substance abuse; decreased anxiety; reduced healthcare utilization and costs; and improved quality of life. ,. Geri partnered with her friend, Penni Feiner, a yoga teacher, and Children’s Aid and Family Services of Bergen County, to develop Kula’s first therapeutic yoga program. Since its inception in 2007, Kula has launched over 300 programs in the Tri-State area, touching the lives of over 3000 people. At the heart of Kula for Karma’s success has been a community of dedicated volunteers, including yoga instructors who are passionate about working with different client populations, as well as allied health professionals, business leaders, and many other supporters.
