Special Quest is an innovative community based program for children and teens with Autism offered by The Arc of Bergen & Passaic.
The after school program offers a variety of activities at community sites such as working out at the gym, the boys and girls club, bowling, and the arts. Activities and sites change so that participants experience a wide range of activities. The after school program operates three days a week: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm.
Special Quest is unique in that it offers a very intensive staff to child ratio. Staff work with participants on a one to one and one to two basis. Staff work collaboratively with families and the child’s school to carry over the techniques and interventions, including Applied behavioral Analysis (ABA), that are being utilized in school for each participant to the extent they can be applied in the after school setting Staff follow, or shadow, the children as they participate in each activity providing training, assistance and intervention as needed.
The program is supervised by a Program Coordinator who has experience with children with Autism and has been trained in ABA. An Assistant Coordinator is available to assume the responsibilities of the coordinator in his/her absence.
Program aides are students and other individuals interested in learning about and working with individuals with Autism. The program is a wonderful opportunity to develop skills and experience in the field of developmental disabilities. Program Aides receive training in Developmental Disabilities, Autism, CPR/First Aid and ABA Techniques.
To apply, contact the Arc’s family support department for more information. This program is funded by the NJ Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) thus participants must also receive a referral through their DDD case manager.
