The Academy of the Holy Angels in Demarest will present 'The Mystery of Edwin Drood': The Solve-It-Yourself Murder Mystery Musical. Performances will be held on Friday, April 7 and Saturday, April 8 at 7:30 pm, and on Sunday, April 9 at 2:00 pm.
Set in an English music hall in the 1890s, 'Drood' is packed with vaudevillian humor. The plot is based on a Charles Dickens novel that the famed author had not yet completed when he died. Composer Rupert Holmes picked up where Dickens left off, but decided to leave the answer to the mystery in the hands of the audience.
“When the play abruptly ends, the audience will be asked to decide who the murderer is (among other things), and the answer may be different every night!” said Director Katie McSherry.
After the audience chooses the murderer, the culprit must sing a confession song that includes all the details of Drood’s last day on earth.
The performing arts program at AHA was recently nominated for six Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards, and earned three: Outstanding Achievement in Musical Direction, George Croom; Outstanding Performance by a Chorus; and Outstanding Direction, Katie McSherry. Ariela Pizza also earned the Metropolitan High School Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. All of these awards were presented for the school’s 2016 production of “Children of Eden.”
This year, a new buffet dinner and theater option will be available at 5:30 pm on Saturday, April 8. Dinner will be catered by AHA’s own Chef Russell Ash, and will be available in the Learning Commons. Dinner guests will have the opportunity to interact with the cast members, who will be in full costume and in character for the occasion.
