The Garfield Recreation Department invites you to the Whole Lotta Empanada Festival on Saturday, April 20, from 11:00 am-7:00 pm. Rain date is Sunday, April 21.

Held at the picturesque 20th Century Park in Garfield, a central hub for recreational and cultural gatherings in Garfield, the event features an impressive lineup of 15 empanada vendors, each competing for the coveted EMPY Award (People’s Choice Best Empanada). But that’s not all! An additional 8 gourmet food trucks will be on site, serving up lobster rolls, seafood, Puerto Rican, Mexican, over the top shakes, chicken, egg rolls, Argentinian bbq, garlic knot sliders, tacos, dessert and more!

Make sure to cast your vote for your favorite empanada and help decide who takes home the EMPY!

The festivities kick off at 11:00 am with a DJ setting the vibe with Latin music. At 12:00 pm, get ready to move your feet with professional Latin dancer Christina Piedra, who will lead an exhilarating hour of dance lessons featuring the Salsa & Bachata.

The musical celebration continues with performances by Raphy Castillo y El Sexteto Quisqueya Salsa band & Mr. LoveJoy, ensuring the beats keep you dancing all day.

Beyond the food and music, the festival is packed with activities for the whole family, including beer, margaritas, and sangria for the adults, a rock wall, pony rides, a petting zoo, inflatables, miniature golf, a bungee trampoline, face painting, sand art, and a variety of vendors. It’s a day of fun and family entertainment that you wont want to miss.

The Bergen County Players (BCP) wraps up its 2023-2024 mainstage season with the Tony Award-winning play “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time.” This acclaimed production coincides with National Autism Acceptance Month.

“The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time” is a drama centered around Christopher Boone, a 15-year-old with a uniquely brilliant mind who happens to be on the autism spectrum. After being mistakenly accused of killing his neighbor’s dog, Christopher embarks on a quest to find the real perpetrator. His investigation unexpectedly steers him towards a profound revelation that will alter his life dramatically. This play delves into the complex dynamics between father and son, unveils the consequences of family secrets, and offers a deep dive into the world as perceived by an extraordinary young individual.

Performances are scheduled to begin on Saturday, April 20 and will continue through Saturday, May 11, at the Little Firehouse Theatre, 298 Kinderkamack Road in Oradell. Showtimes are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, and Sundays at 2:00 pm.

The Puffin Cultural Forum will host the New Jersey premiere of Fly More Than You Fall, a new musical with ambitions for Broadway and the West End. This exclusive event, featuring a live musical concert presentation along with a talk back session, is scheduled for April 20th and April 21st

“Fly More Than You Fall” introduces audiences to the inspiring story of Malia, a young girl who faces her mother’s terminal illness with bravery and strength. Through the art of storytelling and the power of imagination, Malia navigates her way through adversity, turning her trials into moments of growth and empowerment. Chwame Gischuch, also known as “Under the Shad Moon,” is celebrated as the Lenape New Year. It is an event recognized for its significance to the cultural and natural heritage of the region, marking a time when the shad fish run in the rivers.

This celebration at Historic New Bridge Landing in River Edge includes demonstrations and talks, such as the use of stone tools and flint knapping, and discussions on the Material Culture of Prehistory, making it a rich educational experience that connects attendees with the practices and traditions of the Lenape people.

Here’s what’s happening at Chwame Gischuch:

  • Primitive Technologist Steve Adams will be speaking throughout the day on the Material Culture of Prehistory. Steve will be demonstrating the use of stone tools and flint knapping as well as the working of plant fibers.
  • On display for viewing in the state historic 1752 Steuben House will be Revolutionary War artifacts as well as Native American artifacts from the society’s extensive collection.
  • Historian Arthur Kirmss will demonstrate the Native American and colonial craft of wampum bead making.
  • Broom making demonstration at the Westervelt-Thomas Barn
  • Tour the Campbell-Christie House
  • Visit the society’s authentic Jersey Dutch out-kitchen to see interpreters prepare foods using Indigenous ingredients such as corn, squash, and beans.
  • Activities for families including a take home craft and the society’s QR Code cell phone-based scavenger hunt.
  • The gift shop will be open and refreshments including donuts, cornbread, and lemonade will be available for purchase.

Bergen County loves its food truck festivals! They offer a diverse array of gourmet options and cuisines, and they provide a unique opportunity to sample a variety of dishes and flavors that might not be available in traditional restaurants. Food truck festivals often feature live music, entertainment, and activities for children, making them the perfect outing for the entire family. Speaking of fun, don’t miss this fun filled day of culinary delights and family entertainment at the Paramus Food Truck Festival! The festival features 23 gourmet food trucks, live music and plenty of activities including pony rides, a petting zoo, and much more. A highlight for all ages, “Dinosaurs Arise” from 12:30 pm to 3:00 pm, brings prehistoric wonders to life through incredible animatronics. Attendees are asked to contribute to the community by bringing non-perishable food items for the Paramus Food Pantry.

Join the Garden Club of Harrington Park for an evening with John Beirne, the Curatorial Director of Horticulture at Reeves-Reed Arboretum. John will present a talk titled “Flowering Trees that Add Beauty to All Seasons,” discussing both native and non-native species ideal for home gardens. Learn about the best cultivational practices, landscape uses, and maintenance tips.

Step back in time and indulge in a delightful Victorian Tea at the historic John Rosencrantz House. Enjoy traditional tea sandwiches, scones, and desserts while sipping tea and learning about the history of formal tea parties, games, and traditions. Be sure to don your finest hat for the occasion! The event will also feature a guided walk to the Hermitage to discover the story of “The Hermitage Tea Room,” operated from 1917 to 1931. Explore the gardens with master gardeners and tour the Hermitage to learn about its long-standing residents, Theodosia Provost (who married Aaron Burr in the Hermitage in 1782) and the Rosencrantz family.

The Nyack Famous Street Fair really is famous and attracts huge crowds for the spring, summer and fall seasons! The Fair takes place in the heart of historic Nyack in Rockland County, New York, about 15 miles from Bergen County, and features over 300 exhibitors showcasing their wares along downtown Main Street, Broadway, and Cedar Street. You’ll find a wide variety of arts & crafts, retail items, home décor, unique gifts, and more!

There will also be delicious festival foods, music at the gazebo on Main Stjreet, and Nyack’s outdoor restaurants and cafes will be open featuring fair specials. Be sure to check out Nyack’s many boutiques and shops lining downtown too!
