Barrymore Film Center in Fort Lee, NJ

Read about the Barrymore Film Center in Fort Lee NJ on mybergen.com.
Fort Lee’s role in the history of the film industry is commemorated by the Fort Lee Film Commission, the Fort Lee Film Museum, and now, through the fabulous Barrymore Film Center.

Did you know that the motion picture industry in the United States began right here in Bergen County, New Jersey? That’s right! The history of the film industry actually had its infancy in Fort Lee. In fact, Fort Lee played a crucial role as the pioneering center of the film industry during the silent film era. Here’s an overview of that fascinating history:

Birthplace of the Motion Picture Industry

At the start of the 20th century, Fort Lee became a hub for film production due to its proximity to New York City and its varied landscapes, which could stand in for different locations in films.

By 1912, Fort Lee had several film studios and was known as the “Birthplace of the Motion Picture Industry.” Numerous silent films were produced in the area, covering a wide range of genres. Studios like Universal, Fox, and Vitagraph had operations in Fort Lee, contributing to the growth of the film industry.

Industry Pioneers, Innovation, and Influence

Filmmakers and studios in Fort Lee were at the forefront of many filmmaking techniques and innovations, including special effects and set design. D.W. Griffith, a renowned filmmaker, shot some of his groundbreaking films in Fort Lee. Many other legends of the motion picture world, including movie stars Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and the Barrymore family of thespians, launched their film careers in Fort Lee or, at the very least, worked at the many studios dotting the community in the early 1900s.

Decline of the Film Industry in Fort Lee and Shift to Hollywood

The film industry in Fort Lee faced challenges, including labor strikes and competition from other locations like Hollywood, California. By the 1920s, many studios began to move to California, where the climate and access to diverse landscapes made it a more attractive location for year-round production.

Legacy and the Barrymore Film Center

Fort Lee continues to celebrate its role in film history and its cultural heritage through various events, exhibits, and educational initiatives. The history of Fort Lee’s role in the film industry is commemorated by the Fort Lee Film Commission, the Fort Lee Film Museum, which showcases artifacts and information about the early days of cinema, and now, through the Barrymore Film Center.

The Baylor Massacre Burial Site in River Vale is historically significant due to a tragic event that occurred during the American Revolutionary War. The massacre is associated with the Battle of Tappan, which took place on September 28, 1778.

During the Revolutionary War, the area in and around Bergen County saw significant military activity due to its strategic location near New York City. The Baylor Massacre is named after Colonel George Baylor, a Continental Army officer, and his regiment of Virginia Light Dragoons.

Here’s an overview of the Baylor Massacre:

Incident: On the night of September 27, 1778, British forces under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Robert Abercromby launched a surprise attack on the Continental Army’s encampment at Closter Dock Road in what is now Closter, New Jersey. The Continental Army detachment included Colonel Baylor’s Virginia Light Dragoons.

Attack and Aftermath: The British attack caught the Americans off guard, resulting in a chaotic and deadly skirmish. The British managed to capture a significant number of American soldiers, including Baylor, who was wounded and taken prisoner. The British were accused of bayoneting wounded and defenseless American soldiers, which contributed to the tragedy.

Legacy: The Baylor Massacre left a lasting impact on the local community and the Revolutionary War narrative. The site of the massacre serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by American soldiers during the war for independence.

Commemoration: The Baylor Massacre site is preserved and marked with historical markers to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in the battle. It serves as a place of remembrance and education about the Revolutionary War period.

Losen Slote Creek Park in Little Ferry and Moonachie

25 Great Places to Visit in Bergen County Updated for 2020! Fun Things to Do and Points of Interest!
Losen Slote Creek Park is one of our favorite Bergen County spots for nature walks. The park is located minutes from Routes 17, 46, 120 and the New Jersey Turnpike in Little Ferry and Moonachie, New Jersey.

Losen Slote Creek Park in Little Ferry and Moonachie is another one of Bergen County’s best-kept secrets and a real find for nature lovers.

Located a short distance from Routes 3, 17, 46, and 80 and the New Jersey Turnpike, (entrance at Mehrhof Road in Little Ferry), this 28-acre natural area covers six acres of meadowlands and 22 acres of lowland forest – one of the few remaining woodlands in the area.

The Park’s diverse environment supports a variety of wildlife, including many migratory songbirds and deer, small mammals, and reptiles. Mehrhof Pond is an important site for wintering waterfowl, especially Ruddy Ducks, often congregating by the hundreds until the pond freezes solid.

The trails at Losen Slote Creek Park are often narrow and a bit challenging to navigate, with tall grass, vines, and tree roots making it an effort to move at a brisk pace. It can also be a bit muddy so wear appropriate shoes! Plan on a slow, careful, relaxed hike and enjoy the wildlife and serenity that this North Jersey oasis offers.

While this wonderful nature center is far from Bergen County’s bear country, it’s very much in the heart of tick country, so dress accordingly and take proper precautions to avoid ticks. Read more about avoiding tick bites.

The Park’s entrance can be tricky to find from Mehrhof Road. There is street parking and you can access the main trail by walking past the Little Ferry Department of Public Works at 179 Mehrof Road. You’ll pass a large parking lot and a hockey rink on your right. Continue straight and you’ll come to the entrance sign (pictured above) on your left.

The Teaneck Creek Conservancy Nature Park in Teaneck, NJ

Places to visit in Bergen County! Teaneck Creek Conservancy
The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a popular destination for bird watching.

Tucked away in a quiet corner of Teaneck, this unique nature conservancy may be among Bergen County’s best-kept secrets.

The Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a separate entity from the Puffin organization located adjacent to the Puffin Cultural Forum. However, both make the list of mybergen.com’s favorite places to visit in Bergen County! Look for more information about the Puffin Cultural Forum in the next installation of 35 Great Places to Visit in Bergen County!

What the Teaneck Creek Conservancy volunteers have accomplished with this recently-expanded nature center is remarkable. At one time, this was a staging ground for the construction of the intersection of Routes 80 & 95, and then for decades, an unofficial dumpsite for one of the most populous townships in New Jersey’s most populous county. But now, this parcel of land is a wonderful oasis for lovers of the great outdoors, featuring over 1.3 miles of groomed nature trails, an outdoor classroom, and ecological art exhibits.

The newly-improved Conservancy trails are easy to navigate and include charming bridges and walkways to traverse creeks and muddier wetlands sections. Be on the lookout for eco-art installations and beautiful native wildflowers throughout your walk.

There’s a surprising array of wildlife, and over the past few years, we’ve encountered deer, a snapping turtle, and even a garter snake while walking the park. For birders, the Conservancy website offers a comprehensive bird species checklist courtesy of the Bergen County Audubon Society.

As with most outdoor experiences in Bergen County, ticks are a hazard that should be considered when dressing and preparing for your visit to the park. Read more about how to avoid ticks and tick bites.

Located at 20 Puffin Way in Teaneck, New Jersey, the Teaneck Creek Conservancy is close to the NJ Turnpike/I-80 intersection and less than 10 minutes from the George Washington Bridge. Parking is available in the lot at the bottom of Puffin Way or on Fycke Lane. For street parking, be mindful of Teaneck’s street parking ordinances! Teaneck Creek parking is open, free of charge, 365 days a year from dawn to dusk. Make sure you check out the Puffin Sculpture Park before or after your hike!

Completion of Habitat Restoration of Teaneck Creek Park

A large-scale habitat restoration project was completed in 2022.
