The Community Chest, a nonprofit organization serving eastern Bergen County, is working with area nonprofits to find solutions to pressing needs our neighbors in the region are experiencing during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization is providing nonprofit agencies with the tools to carry out their missions to address food scarcity, family services and mental health care.
Stimulated by a group discussion with local nonprofit agency leaders identifying their needs, a team effort, organized by The Community Chest and Vantage Health System, resulted in Center for Food Action (CFA) receiving a large amount of coffee from Massimo Zanetti Beverage USA (MZB). “For 87 years, The Community Chest has provided nonprofit agency leaders with a forum to discuss problems and identify solutions to help neighbors experiencing difficulties. The donation of coffee exemplifies the services we provide to our nonprofit grantees such as Vantage Health System, which identified a significant resource of coffee available from Massimo Zanetti Beverage, and our facilitation of the donation to Center for Food Action,” said Dr. Shelly Wimpfheimer, Executive Director, The Community Chest.
“When community partners like The Community Chest, Vantage Health System and Massimo Zanetti come together, we can provide the families and individuals we serve something they may not have access to otherwise,” said Patricia Espy, Executive Director of Center for Food Action. “In a time of crisis and upheaval, coffee is a welcome, and for many, necessary piece of normal life.”

Center for Food Action is witnessing a dramatic increase in food assistance requests, as more residents are out of work as a result of businesses closing due to the Coronavirus. Each week, hundreds of emergency food packages are distributed through appointment-only, drive-through pickups at CFA’s five area pantries. As an essential business, Center for Food Action has implemented new appointment-only, drive-up distribution practices to adhere to social distancing policies.
Founded in 1933, The Community Chest, a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization, has supported local not-for-profit agencies for 87 years. The Chest leads initiatives and supports nonprofits that make our communities stronger and benefit people in need in eastern Bergen County. Each year, The Chest raises funds and allocates them to agencies demonstrating the capacity to provide services to local citizens. The organization also provides coordinating and planning services in its communities, serving as a bridge between agencies and organizations and investing in the stability and quality of the service network.
