There’s a new way to listen to WFDU-FM, 89.1, the radio voice of Fairleigh Dickinson University — just launch iHeartRadio on your smartphone, tablet or computer.
“iHeartRadio is the premiere digital platform for Clear Channel Content, the largest media company in America. As such, we are part of a very visible group of important radio stations, both online and terrestrial,” says Barry “Duff” Sheffield, general manager and program director of WFDU/Broadcast Media, BS’74 (Metro).
Listeners can interact with their favorite songs and radio stations on iHeartRadio. The site allows for customizable playlists and features an online store for music purchases. New and current listeners can find WFDU in iHeartRadio’s ‘eclectic’ category or by searching "WFDU."
“If people become familiar with WFDU as more than just a terrestrial station, and it’s synonymous with good music that you can’t hear anywhere else, our reputation will grow,” Sheffield says. “We’ve increased our listening modalities.”
Sheffield expects listeners to “bump into” the station on the radio, online and through iHeartRadio and iTunes Radio.
One of the requirements of joining iHeartRadio is to have unique programming on the online stream all the time. So, Sheffield is developing a new, all-online schedule of shows to complement the station’s standard FM transmissions. The comprehensive new schedule will take shape by the end of September, but look forward to hearing children’s music, organ music, bluesy roots, jug band, gospel and the “Garden State sound,” featuring New Jersey artists and tunes.
“Radio is evolving at a rapid rate right now, because it has to. The younger generations are listening less and less. Radio needs to adapt to survive,” says Sheffield. “We want to be up in the front of the line, changing with the industry.”
Since 1971, WFDU-FM has been the radio voice of Fairleigh Dickinson University. The station broadcasts from the historic Armstrong Tower in Alpine, New Jersey.
