The business community in Fair Lawn, New Jersey, introduced a fun way to create local community excitement and consumer activity during the dog days of late summer. Throughout the month of August, the Fair Lawn Economic Development Corporation and the Borough’s Main Street NJ Program ran a Small Business Scavenger Hunt.

The Fair Lawn Small Business Scavenger Hunt invited people to submit selfies of themselves visiting various shops and stores throughout Fair Lawn’s different business districts for a chance to win gift certificates to local stores. Receipts to the stores could also be submitted to the Fair Lawn Economic Development Corporation in order to be entered into a drawing for a chance to win prizes.

Gift card prizes were provided by the River Road Improvement Corporation and the
Broadway Improvement Corporation. “The support of both the River Road and Broadway
Improvement Corporations really made this Scavenger Hunt a borough-wide success,” said Fair Lawn Main Street Executive Director Ryan Greff, “Their partnership truly brought the business community together.”

Scavenger Hunt Generates Excitement in Fair Lawn

The event gained considerable traction and excitement within Fair Lawn from both scavenger hunt participants and business owners. “The customers were excited because all they had to do was take a selfie or send in a receipt for the chance to be entered into the drawing,” explained Hector Almazan, Owner of the Soup Maison. The Soup Maison was one of twenty-six businesses included in the scavenger hunt. The Cadmus House and Garretson Forge & Farm historical sites were also included as destinations on the scavenger hunt.

Fair Lawn Has It All

A total of 333 scavenger hunt photograph/receipt submissions were received. “Going down
River Road, I was surprised by just how many different kinds of businesses exist on one local road. Ice cream shops, taco restaurants, Chinese food places, exercise studios, pharmacies, diners: Fair Lawn really has it all,” touted Scavenger Hunt participant Alex Henao.

In addition to the gift cards, the Scavenger Hunt grand prize was a flat screen that was won by Elliot Silverman.

Prizes were distributed at the Fair Lawn Borough Hall on September 14, 2022.
